Petition to the Government of Ontario: Invest in Safe, Modern Schools for Waterloo Region

Families, educators, and community members of Waterloo Region demand immediate action to fix our crumbling schools and build new ones for our growing student population.

The facts:

  • Over 50 public schools in Waterloo Region are below a state of good repair, with a $178 million local repair backlog.

  • The WRDSB, WCDSB, and local French-language boards all face overcrowding and urgent facility needs.

  • Thousands of new student spaces are needed to keep up with enrolment growth.

  • Investing in school infrastructure creates local jobs in trades and construction, boosting our economy.

We call on the Ontario government to:

  1. Increase 10-year school capital funding to at least $31.4 billion.

  2. Repair and replace schools in urgent need, across all boards.

  3. Build new schools to prevent overcrowding.

Safe schools. Modern classrooms. Local jobs. Our children and communities can’t wait.

    We are doing a great disservice to children with special needs when we aren’t giving them classrooms or assistance that actually meets their needs. It is also traumatizing to the other students to watch meltdowns or behaviour issues that threatens that child’s safety or the safety of the other children in the classroom. We need to properly fund special education for the sake of every child!

    We are desperate for congregated classes to appropriately address student needs. Our system is full of classes with severe needs that are adversely impacting the learning of the rest of the students. Inclusion without support isn’t good for anyone.
