Petition to the Government of Ontario: Invest in Safe, Modern Schools for Waterloo Region
Families, educators, and community members of Waterloo Region demand immediate action to fix our crumbling schools and build new ones for our growing student population.
The facts:
-
Over 50 public schools in Waterloo Region are below a state of good repair, with a $178 million local repair backlog.
-
The WRDSB, WCDSB, and local French-language boards all face overcrowding and urgent facility needs.
-
Thousands of new student spaces are needed to keep up with enrolment growth.
-
Investing in school infrastructure creates local jobs in trades and construction, boosting our economy.
We call on the Ontario government to:
-
Increase 10-year school capital funding to at least $31.4 billion.
-
Repair and replace schools in urgent need, across all boards.
-
Build new schools to prevent overcrowding.
Safe schools. Modern classrooms. Local jobs. Our children and communities can’t wait.
Sign to demand action today!

Sarah Finamore signed 2025-09-22 18:46:25 -0400as a paraprofessional for the public school board, less Ea support and growing number of students in every class, we are running around putting out fires instead if having the time to teach skills so our students can be successful in school and as adults, we need more of us to give each classroom the support it needs to help educate our young students -
Hannah Wright signed 2025-09-22 18:29:11 -0400We are rationing staples at my school. That is how badly funded we are. If you stripped my classroom of resources I have personally funded, there would be a few whiteboard markers, notebooks, social studies texts shared between 4 classes, and some clipboards. Please. Better equip our students so they can become the next leaders! We can’t afford not to! -
I worked for this school board for 6 months and the conditions for all staff and students were awful. It was not a place I would want my child and very unsafe for staff. Please listen to educators and make schools safe to learn -

Linda Shantz signed 2025-09-22 16:43:19 -0400I am a retired EA/ECE with the WRDSB. I worked for many years with children who had various kinds of disabilities. We lacked rooms for privacy and dignity, calm, quiet environments, providing safety and consistency for our students.
We wasted more valuable time searching for a space that wasn’t being utilized by someone else. These students are important and attention to their needs is a necessity. -
