Petition to the Government of Ontario: Invest in Safe, Modern Schools for Waterloo Region

Families, educators, and community members of Waterloo Region demand immediate action to fix our crumbling schools and build new ones for our growing student population.

The facts:

  • Over 50 public schools in Waterloo Region are below a state of good repair, with a $178 million local repair backlog.

  • The WRDSB, WCDSB, and local French-language boards all face overcrowding and urgent facility needs.

  • Thousands of new student spaces are needed to keep up with enrolment growth.

  • Investing in school infrastructure creates local jobs in trades and construction, boosting our economy.

We call on the Ontario government to:

  1. Increase 10-year school capital funding to at least $31.4 billion.

  2. Repair and replace schools in urgent need, across all boards.

  3. Build new schools to prevent overcrowding.

    My child, who was in one of the congregated classes at Elizabeth Ziegler Public School, fully failed to reach any goals for her 2024-25 year due to the devastating repair situation at that school. Being removed from her familiar spaces, her ability to walk to a school in her neighbourhood, and the disruption in her daily routines absolutely ruined her last year of school, and she refused to continue in the Gifted Education programs she very much needs.


    You cannot just treat these cherished learning institutions as interchangeable warehouses for shelving children, and move them to some new containers when you cannot keep up with the work. Schools are intertwined with students and families lives and Ontario kids and families deserve the safety and stability of responsible capital investment and upkeep.
